Identity Systems

On Building Visual Systems

A practical note on creating identities that can expand without losing their centre.

Most identities are judged on launch day, when every application has been designed by the people who made the system. The real test comes a year later, when someone else has to make a poster on a Friday afternoon.

Start with the rules people will use

We now write the guidelines before we finish the logo. If a rule cannot be explained in one sentence, the system probably depends on our judgment rather than its own logic, and it will break as soon as we leave.

For Northline, the core rules fit on a single page: one typeface, two weights, a frame for every drawing and a fixed relationship between text and image. Everything else follows from those four decisions.

Expect the system to be misused

We test identities by handing templates to people outside the studio and watching where they hesitate. Those moments show which rules are missing and which ones are only decoration.

  • Can a new team member make a correct poster in under an hour?
  • Does the identity still work in one colour?
  • Which elements can be removed before it stops being recognisable?

If the answers are yes, yes and very few, the system is ready to leave the studio.
